Trust & Privacy

Your district's data stays your district's.

Asperix builds for California K–12 districts, so student privacy is part of the design, not an add-on. Here is exactly how we handle student data, in plain language, before your IT team has to ask.

Our commitments

Six promises we put in writing.

These hold for every district, and they're backed by the data privacy agreement we sign with you.

Your district owns the data

Student records belong to the district. Your SIS stays the source of truth, and we never write back to it.

Never sold, never used for ads

We don't sell student data, share it with data brokers or use it for advertising of any kind.

Never used to train AI

No student record is sent to, processed by, or used to train any AI or large language model.

A separate database for every district

Each district runs on its own dedicated database. Your data is never mixed with another district's.

Only what independent study needs

We collect the minimum fields required to run and document placements, and nothing more.

Returned or deleted at the end

When a contract ends, we return or delete district data on the timeline set in your signed agreement.

Our AI statement

Student data never touches AI.

Student data in Asperix ISST is never sent to, processed by, or used to train any AI or large language model. No AI features touch student records. If that ever changes, it will happen only with the district's written agreement and an updated data privacy agreement.

  • None of our subprocessors is an AI or large language model provider.
  • Development and product demos use synthetic data only, never real student records.
  • Production credentials and district data are never available to AI development tools.
Built to the law

Designed around the laws that protect students.

Asperix ISST is built to meet federal and California student-privacy law, and we sign the California Student Data Privacy Agreement.

FERPA20 U.S.C. §1232g

We act under the district's direct control as a school official with a legitimate educational interest.

COPPA15 U.S.C. §6501

Student accounts exist only at the district's direction, for the school's educational purpose.

SOPIPABus. & Prof. Code §22584

No targeted advertising, no student profiles for non-school purposes, no sale of student data.

AB 1584Ed. Code §49073.1

District ownership and control, deletion at contract end, and breach notification, all in the contract.

How we protect it

Security practices

  • Encrypted in transit and at rest.
  • Student data is stored in the United States.
  • Separate database per district, never shared or co-mingled.
  • Role-based access enforced in the database, not just in the interface. Each role's access is set by the district, and the rules are checked by the database itself.
  • Auditor access is read-only, scoped to what an audit needs, and time-limited.
  • An audit trail records changes to each placement and who made them.
Agreements & response

Data privacy agreement

  • We sign the California Student Data Privacy Agreement (CA-NDPA), the standard agreement used by California districts, so your team isn't negotiating a new contract from scratch.
  • Incident response: if a security incident ever affects your district's data, we notify you without unreasonable delay and within the timeline in your signed agreement, and we work with your team through resolution.
  • Security reviews welcome: we'll complete your district's security questionnaire and answer your IT team's questions directly.
  • For your IT approval packet we provide the signed DPA, our subprocessor list and a written summary of the practices on this page.
